2. Venice
Stop
About the destination: Venice is a city like no other: a labyrinth of canals, marble palaces, and hidden courtyards floating on the Adriatic. Built on more than 100 small islands, it has no roads—only waterways and narrow alleys that suddenly open onto breathtaking piazzas. At its heart lies St. Mark’s Square, framed by the dazzling Basilica di San Marco, the Doge’s Palace, and the iconic Campanile. From here, you can wander under arcades lined with cafés and listen to live orchestras as the sun sets over the lagoon. The Grand Canal is Venice’s main thoroughfare, curving through the city like a glittering highway of water. Riding a vaporetto (water bus) offers a front-row view of Gothic and Renaissance palaces, their facades reflected in the rippling surface. For a more intimate experience, slip into one of the smaller canals on a gondola and glide beneath low stone bridges, passing quiet neighborhoods where laundry hangs over the water and church bells echo between the walls. Beyond the famous sights, Venice rewards slow exploration. Lose yourself in the districts of Cannaregio and Dorsoduro, where local bacari (wine bars) serve cicchetti—small Venetian tapas—alongside spritz and local wines. Cross the Rialto Bridge to visit its bustling market, where fishmongers and fruit vendors supply the city’s kitchens, and artisans sell Murano glass and traditional masks. Each sestiere (district) has its own character, from elegant San Marco to the more bohemian, artsy feel of Dorsoduro. Venice also makes an ideal base for exploring the lagoon islands. Take a short boat ride to Murano, famous for its centuries-old glassmaking tradition, where you can watch master glassblowers at work. Continue to Burano, a photographer’s dream with its brightly painted houses and lace workshops, and then on to Torcello, a peaceful island with ancient churches and a rare sense of quiet. Whether you come for art, history, or romance, Venice offers a dreamlike atmosphere that lingers long after you leave.

About the destination: Padua, nestled in the Veneto region just 30 minutes by train from Venice, is one of Italy’s oldest and most intellectually vibrant cities. Home to the prestigious University of Padua, founded in 1222, it has long attracted scholars, artists, and free thinkers. Today, the city blends youthful energy with a rich historical tapestry, offering visitors a less crowded, more authentic alternative to its famous neighbor. At the heart of Padua lies the Basilica of Saint Anthony, an important pilgrimage site that impresses with its mix of Romanesque, Gothic, and Byzantine elements, as well as masterpieces by Donatello. A short walk away, the Scrovegni Chapel houses Giotto’s groundbreaking frescoes, considered a turning point in Western art for their emotional depth and vivid colors. Be sure to book tickets in advance, as entry is tightly controlled to protect the delicate paintings. Padua’s everyday life revolves around its elegant squares. Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza della Frutta buzz with market stalls selling vegetables, cheeses, and local specialties, while Piazza dei Signori is the perfect spot for an aperitivo as the sun sets behind Renaissance facades. Nearby, the historic Caffè Pedrocchi, once a meeting place for intellectuals and revolutionaries, is ideal for a traditional coffee or a leisurely break. Nature and contemplation await at the Orto Botanico, Padua’s botanical garden and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, founded in 1545 and considered the world’s oldest university garden still in its original location. From here, it is easy to stroll along the medieval streets to Prato della Valle, one of Europe’s largest squares, ringed by statues and crossed by quiet canals. Whether you come for art, faith, or a taste of Italian daily life, Padua offers depth, charm, and discovery at every turn.

About the destination: Vicenza is a city in northeastern Italy. It is in the Veneto region at the northern base of the Monte Berico, where it straddles the Bacchiglione River. Vicenza is a thriving and cosmopolitan city, with a rich history and culture, and many museums, art galleries, piazzas, villas, churches and elegant Renaissance palazzi. MAIN TOURIST ATTRACTIONS • Basilica Palladiana is a massive structure on the city's main square. It still has the old and leaning clock tower from a previous building on that site. • Loggia del Capitanio. • Teatro Olimpico. Teatro Olimpico is the oldest enclosed theater in the world, and is most noteworthy for its use of Renaissance perspective in a three-dimensional space. • Chiesa di Santa Corona. • Palazzo Leoni Montanari. A beautifully decorated palace, the building houses a decent collection of Russian icons as well as a collection of capricci and paintings by Pietro Longhi. • Palazzo Valmarana Braga is a monumental palace built by Palladio, and the first in Palladio's career to include columns running along the entire length of the building's facade. • Palazzo Barbaran is the only palace started and completed by Palladio in the city center. • Palazzo Thiene. Sadly, it is the headquarters of a bank, so much of the interior has been changed to accomodate its present purpose.

Stay
About the destination: Set amid endless vineyards and cypress groves, this melange of Roman ruins, pink palazzi and fanciful sepulchres has a romantic beauty that is difficult to over-praise. Shakespeare set Romeo and Juliet here, and would likely be amused to know that his imaginary lovers have become Verona’s hottest tourist attraction. Nonetheless, Verona has more to offer than just Romeo and Juliet. In Verona’s centre, Brà square, there is the almost perfectly preserved Roman Arena. Up via Mazzini from the Arena is piazza delle Erbe, where corny gadgets are sold amid the Renaissance palazzo of former Veronese merchants and has a lively atmosphere with pretty cafes and dazzling restaurants. Through an arch on the right are piazza dei Signori and the Tombs of the Scaligeri, the peculiar Gothic remnants of della Scalla, Verona’s medieval tyrants. The equestrian statue of Cangrande I, head of the Scalla clan is a glorification of raw power and can be visited at the museum of Castelvecchio. But if you are an incurable romantic, at 23 via Cappello you’ll find Juliet’s house, where lovers graffiti their hopeful pleas. The house where Romeo used to live is now a bar. This ancient city exudes history from every brick and is well worth a visit.
