With its historic centre classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Duomo, the elegant and beautiful cathedral, dominates the city and is an unmistakable reference point in your wanderings. The River Arno, which cuts through the oldest part of the city, is crowned with the Ponte Vecchio bridge lined with shops and held up by stilts. Dating back to the 14th century, it is the only bridge that survived attacks during WWII. Standing by the river at night, when the city is illuminated with a myriad twinkling lights, is unforgettable. But more remains of Florence’s incomparable heritage than stones and paint, the city’s indomitable spirit has also survived the centuries, ensuring Florentine life today its liveliness and sophistication.

About the destination: The area of modern Piombino was settled since ancient times. During the Etruscan era the main city in the area was Populonia, now a frazione within the comune of Piombino. The name Piombino derives almost certainly from Populino, meaning "Small Populonia", which the refugees gave to a small village where they had taken refuge after the city had been attacked by Greek pirates (9th century). It is also probable that Piombino had already been founded during the Ostrogoth domination. In 1022 the Monastery of San Giustiniano was founded in the area, boosting the activity of fishermen, sailors and workers. In 1115 Piombino submitted to the Republic of Pisa, becoming its second main port: authority was exerted by a Capitano ("Captain"). During the conflicts between the Pisane and the Genoese (12th–13th centuries) the city was sacked various times. In 1248 the Capitano Ugolino Arsopachi built the Channels.

About the destination: Bastia is the lively and cultural city in Corsica as well as its business and financial centre. It was the capital of the Genoese administration of Corsica until the mid-18th century. It has preserved the architecture and atmosphere of that time, and has a rugged, unrefined charm. But Bastia is undoubtedly Mediterranean. The old quarter, known as the Terra Vecchia, is full of wonderful streets, cute shops and flamboyant Baroque churches. There are many things to explore like the 15th century Oratoire St.Roch with a rich Baroque interior and a fantastic organ or Corsica's largest church, the 17th century Saint-Jean Baptiste cathedral. In the nearby Place du Marche, there is a flea market every weekend. The area surrounding the Citadelle, Terra Nova neighbourhood, is one of the most colourful parts of town. Just take time to wonder around its restored houses and mansions. Stroll around the Palace of the Governors once grand gardens, Jardin Romieu, from where you can enjoy a view of the Vieux Port, the Old Port. The Vieux Port is a wonderful part of the city, with tall, faded buildings surrounding a marina with posh yachts. Corsica’s most successful commercial town is a lively and charming place with a wonderful port, interesting architecture, good restaurants and many cultural events. Bastia is much more than sun and sand.
